All About Super Duckies

How it all

began

My son Adam attends day care.  When he was three the teachers at his school wouldn't allow Adam or his friends to play pretend games involving super heroes as they were deemed too violent.  So Adam and his buddies came up with Super Duckies, a game they were allowed to play, even though they played it almost exactly the same as they were playing their original super hero game.

This inventive trump by the kids struck a chord with me and the image of little super powered ducks really made me laugh.  I ended up doodling a Super Duck for Adam in a graphics tool I was learning, Inskscape.    After I showed it to Adam, he immediately wanted more of them in different colors.  I did a few, and left it at that.

Several years later while browsing through the kid's section at a book sale, a friend urged me to stop yacking about making a kid's book and just make one already.  And here we are!

Future Books

Where do we go from here?

Super Duckies was originally an ambitious six story arc in the vein of a six part comic book series.  After working on Part One: The Super Squad for several months I reined it in and condensed the story to its core component - the search for Cameron "Cranky" Quacker.

In the two additional stories you'll get to meet a few more interesting characters and eventually you'll find out just where Cameron is and what a crazy, powerful little force of nature the Super Duckies are up against!

The plan is for book two to be available sometime the summer of 2014 and for book three to be available winter of 2014.  Of course, these dates are very tentative.

The Series

  • Part One: The Super Squad

  • Part Two: The Bully

  • Part Three: Cranky Quacker

For Parents
What Super Duckies aims to achieve

Super Duckies primarily aims to entertain young readers.  The characters in the stories are powerless, everyday, imaginative young ducks that must overcome problems using their imagination and wit.  If they can't use might or superpowers to right a situation, they'll use their inventive and inquisitive nature instead.  The Super Duckies always act as a team and use each other's individual strengths to overcome whatever they might be up against.

Each story teaches a small lesson, but never at the expense of the entertainment of the children or adults reading the story.  The fun comes first!

Super Duckies will also introduce them to the concept of a serialized story, visual storytelling (in the manner of a graphic novel), and how to follow comic-style dialogue.
